The new chief executive of National Australia Bank’s standalone online bank UBank has predicted rapid growth in its home loan business as consumers get increasingly confident with running their affairs on mobile devices, and said Big Four rivals seemingly lacked the courage to launch competing institutions.

NAB’s former head of group regulatory strategy and affairs Lee Hatton quietly took over the CEO role in April, following the departure of former CEO Alex Twigg to an executive role at Woolworths. In her first interview since taking on the job, she said the eight year old institution’s move into home loans 18 months ago had seen 10,000 customers sign on, but that the pace was increasing following the launch of a streamlined mobile application process a week ago.
